Barbara Jane Wells

Barbara Jane Wells (1918-1978, OC 1940) was an educator and college administrator. She graduated from Oberlin College in 1940 with a B.A. in political science. She received her M.A. from New York University in 1957 and her Ph.D. from the same university in 1963. Wells’ career spanned a variety of positions including work as a statistician for the Committee for Economic Development in New York City from 1943 to 1945, a position as the Assistant Director of Admissions at Pace College from 1953 to 1956, and a number of teaching positions at Douglass College, Skidmore College, and Mills College. She became the Dean of Thomas More College at Fordham University in 1968. In 1971, Wells was appointed the Dean of Faculty at Vassar College and held the position until 1976. From 1973 to 1974 Wells served as the acting president of Vassar.
