She graduated from Oberlin College in 1925 and received her M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Columbia University. After completing her education, she worked as an assistant lecturer at Barnard College and at Washington Square College of New York City. From 1933 to 1968 TeWinkel was a zoology professor at Smith College. She also served Smith College as the Dean of the Class of 1951, chair of the zoology department, 1952-1955, and president of the Smith College chapter of Sixma Xi, 1963-1964. TeWinkel used her sabbaticals leaves to work for the Bureau of Fisheries in Pensacola, Fla., the Naples Zoological Station in Italy, the Scripps Institutions in California, and the Lerner Marine Laboratory in the Bahamas. She wrote numerous articles relating to her research on fish and sharks. After retiring, TeWinkel continued to contribute to the field of zoology. She became the director of the Clark Science Center from 1972 to 1973.
