Hope Hibbard

Hope Hibbard (1893-1988) was a zoologist and educator. She attended the University of Missouri where completed her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1916 and her Master of Arts degree in 1918. After graduating she enrolled at the Bryn Mawr where she completed a Ph.D. in 1921. From 1921 to 1922 Hibbard worked as an assistant professor of biology at Elmira College. She was employed as an associate professor from 1922 to 1925 at that college.

In 1925 Hibbard won an American Association of University Women scholarship to work in Paris for two years. However, she remained in Paris and later attended the University of Paris (Sorbonne). Hibbard completed a Docteur ès Sciences degree in 1928. She focused her research on marine biology and invertebrate animals, as well as the structure of cells.

After graduating she returned to the United States and began working at Oberlin College as a instructor of Zoology in 1928. She became a full professor in 1936. That year she started the Oberlin chapter of the League of Women Voters. In 1952 she was made Johnston professor. From 1954 to 1958 she was the chair of the Zoology department. She retired in 1964.

Hibbard was a trustee of the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole, Massachusetts. She was a member of the American Society of Naturalists, the Ohio Academy of Science, the American Association of Anatomists, the American Institute of Biological Societies, and the American Society of Zoologists. Hibbard was an honorary life member of the American Association of University Women
